San Diego International Airport Selects Critical Loop to Operationalize Efficient Energy Usage
Nov 20, 2025
Industry power-houses come together to revolutionize power infrastructure at the busiest single-runway commercial airport in the U.S.
Long Beach, California — Nov. 20, 2025 — Critical Loop, a leader in energy technology and innovation, today announced that San Diego International Airport (SAN) has selected the company to operationalize part of its energy infrastructure. The relationship leverages software-enabled hardware to transform the airport’s impact on the electrical grid while potentially saving SAN millions of dollars.Critical Loop delivers a unified power control platform managing its battery energy storage system in concert with on-site solar on the SAN campus with intelligent automation. Using a machine learning model, the system accurately forecasts power demand, enabling proactive load management. The platform’s automation ensures seamless, uninterrupted operation while continuously monitoring system health to provide early alerts for timely maintenance — maximizing reliability and operational efficiency for critical infrastructure.
While San Diego Airport owns the batteries, Critical Loop’s operations are primarily software-driven, utilizing proprietary software on an on-site controller to predict, manage, and monitor battery performance.
This implementation also alleviates grid congestion by reducing peak-period demand, enabling the utility company to better utilize renewable energy sources and optimize the overall grid.
Quote from Critical Loop:"San Diego Airport is setting a new standard for energy efficiency. Our predictive software and battery technology work together to cut peak demand, lower costs, and support a smarter grid," said Bala Ramamurthy, CEO & Co-Founder of Critical Loop.
Quote from San Diego Airport:“Working with Critical Loop gives us real-time insights and control over our energy use, helping us operate smarter, reduce grid stress, and make sustainable choices for the airport and our community," said Cogan Semler, Energy and Water Manager, Facilities Management Dept at San Diego Airport.

About San Diego Airport (SAN)
Owned and operated by San Diego County Regional Airport Authority (Airport Authority), San Diego International Airport (SAN) is one of the busiest single-runway commercial service airports in the world and the third-busiest airport in California. SAN serves 11 nonstop international routes to Europe, South America and Asia, and contributes nearly $12 billion in economic activity for the San Diego region. In September 2025, the Airport Authority opened the first phase of the new Terminal 1, a larger and more efficient facility that has greatly enhanced the customer experience at SAN. Once the New T1 project is complete in 2028, it will feature a total of 30 gates and will have generated more than $4.5 billion for San Diego’s economy and created more than 25,000 jobs, paying a total of $2 billion in wages to local workers.
